Why one date has so many forms

The same day can be written as 10/23/2026 in the United States, 23/10/2026 in most of Europe and 2026-10-23 in the ISO 8601 standard that software prefers. Logistics labels and mainframes often use a Julian date code such as 26296, which means day 296 of 2026. Computers count seconds since 1970 (Unix time), Excel counts days since 1900, and astronomers count days since 4713 BC.

Calendars differ too. The Islamic calendar follows the moon and is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, the Hebrew and Chinese calendars add a leap month to stay in step with the seasons, and the Persian and Nepali calendars begin their year in spring. Each converter page explains how its system works and which rules or official tables it follows; the method page lists the sources and the checks we run.

Reading 03/04/2026

Numeric dates are ambiguous across countries: 03/04/2026 is March 4 in the US and 3 April in the UK. When a date crosses borders, write the year first (2026-03-04) or spell out the month. The date format converter reads a typed date in the order you choose.
