MM/DD/YYYY and other date formats: converter and guide

MM/DD/YYYY is the US order, with the month first: 10/23/2026 is 23 October 2026. Enter a date, or type one and choose whether it is month-day-year, day-month-year or year-month-day, to see it in every common format.

Numbers like 03/04/2026 mean different dates in different countries, so choose the order.

The three orders: month first, day first, year first

Every numeric date format is one of three orders. The separator, slash, hyphen or dot, varies by country and habit, but the order is what decides how a date is read.

Order Pattern 23 October 2026 Written form
Month-day-year MM/DD/YYYY 10/23/2026 October 23, 2026
Day-month-year DD/MM/YYYY 23/10/2026 23 October 2026
Year-month-day YYYY-MM-DD 2026-10-23 2026 October 23

Leading zeros are optional in everyday writing (10/3/2026), but fixed-width forms with zeros line up in tables and sort better. A two-digit year, as in 10/23/26, saves space but needs the reader to know the century.

Which countries use which format

The locale data in Unicode CLDR, which browsers and operating systems use to format dates, gives these default numeric orders:

  • United States: MM/DD/YYYY, written “October 23, 2026”.
  • United Kingdom, France, India, Australia, Mexico and most of Latin America and Europe: DD/MM/YYYY, written “23 October 2026”.
  • Germany and Russia: DD.MM.YYYY, with dots (23.10.2026).
  • Netherlands: DD-MM-YYYY, with hyphens (23-10-2026).
  • Sweden and Lithuania: YYYY-MM-DD, the ISO form (2026-10-23).
  • China, Japan and Korea: year, month, day. The CLDR numeric form for Chinese and Japanese is 2026/10/23, and the written form is 2026年10月23日.

These are locale defaults, and individual organizations can choose otherwise. US military writing, for example, uses day-month-year, as explained on the military date page.

Why 03/04/2026 is ambiguous

When both the day and the month are 12 or less, a numeric date can be read two ways. 03/04/2026 is Wednesday, March 4, 2026 to a reader in the US, and Friday, 3 April 2026 to a reader in the UK or Germany. The two readings are a month apart, which is enough to miss a deadline or a flight.

Dates with a day above 12 give themselves away: 10/23/2026 can only be month-first. That is why the converter asks which order a typed date uses: 23/10/2026 is only valid as day-month-year.

There are two ways to remove the doubt. Write the month as a word (“4 March 2026” or “March 4, 2026”), or use the year-first ISO form, 2026-03-04, which always puts the month second. The ISO 8601 page covers that standard, including times and UTC offsets.

Written and short forms

When the month is a word, the order matters less, but punctuation differs. US style puts the month first and a comma before the year: October 23, 2026. Day-first style needs no comma: 23 October 2026. With the weekday, US style is Friday, October 23, 2026 and day-first style is Friday 23 October 2026.

Short forms use a three-letter month:

Short form Example Style
Mon DD, YYYY Oct 23, 2026 US
DD Mon YYYY 23 Oct 2026 Day-first, international
DD-Mon-YY 23-Oct-26 Excel’s built-in d-mmm-yy format; Oracle’s default DD-MON-RR
DDMMMYY 23OCT26 US military forms

Two-digit years are the other weak point of short numeric dates. 10/23/26 is clear today, but software has to guess the century when it reads one, and different programs guess differently. Use four-digit years in anything that will be stored or reread years later.

Changing the date format in Excel and Windows

Excel stores a date as a number and shows it through a format, so changing the format does not change the date. To set a format, select the cells, open Format Cells (Ctrl+1), choose Custom and type a pattern such as mm/dd/yyyy, dd/mm/yyyy or yyyy-mm-dd. To produce text in a fixed format for export, use =TEXT(A1,"yyyy-mm-dd").

Dates typed into Excel are read in the order of your system’s regional settings. In Windows, that order is set under Settings, Time and language, Language and region, Regional format. The stored numbers behind dates are explained on the Excel date converter.

Choosing a format

  • For readers in one country: use that country’s order, or write the month as a word.
  • For international readers: write the month as a word, such as 23 October 2026.
  • For files, databases and file names: use YYYY-MM-DD or YYYYMMDD. They sort in date order as plain text and are not ambiguous.

The homepage shows today’s date in each of these formats at once, together with the ISO week, day of the year and Julian date.

Questions

What does MM/DD/YYYY mean?

Two digits for the month, two for the day and four for the year, in that order. 23 October 2026 is 10/23/2026. It is the standard numeric order in the United States.

Is DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY correct?

Both are correct where they are used. The US writes MM/DD/YYYY, while the UK, most of Europe, Latin America, India and Australia write DD/MM/YYYY. For data shared across countries, YYYY-MM-DD avoids the question.

Is 03/04/2026 March 4 or April 3?

It depends on the writer. In the US it is March 4, 2026, a Wednesday; in day-first countries it is 3 April 2026, a Friday. Use a month name or 2026-03-04 to remove the doubt.

What date format does Germany use?

Germany writes day, month, year with dots: 23.10.2026. Russia uses the same style.

What is the YYYYMMDD format?

The ISO 8601 calendar date without hyphens: 20261023 for 23 October 2026. It sorts correctly as text and as a number, which is why it is common in file names and databases.
