How Bikram Sambat works

Bikram Sambat (BS, also written Vikram Samvat) is the official calendar of Nepal. It is a solar calendar based on the sidereal zodiac: each month starts when the sun enters the next sign. Because the sun moves at slightly different speeds through the year, months have from 29 to 32 days, and the lengths change from year to year.

There is no official formula for those lengths. Nepal’s calendar committee, the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikas Samiti, approves the almanacs (panchangas) and wall calendars for each year. The 2083 BS almanacs went on sale on 16 February 2026, about two months before the year began.

So every BS converter works from a table of month lengths, not a formula. Ours covers 1970 to 2090 BS (13 April 1913 to 13 April 2034). The years up to 2083 BS are settled and agree across all the sources we checked, including Hamro Patro.

New Year and the 56 years 8 months offset

The BS year begins on 1 Baisakh, which falls on 13 or 14 April.

BS year 1 Baisakh (AD) Status
2082 Monday 14 April 2025 Approved
2083 Tuesday 14 April 2026 Approved
2084 Wednesday 14 April 2027 Date fixed by the 2083 calendar; 2084 months provisional
2085 13 or 14 April 2028 Depends on the 2084 calendar

BS runs about 56 years and 8 months ahead of AD. From 1 Baisakh to 31 December, the BS year is the AD year plus 57. From 1 January to the end of Chaitra, it is plus 56. For example, 1 January 2026 was 17 Poush 2082, and 13 April 2026 was 30 Chaitra 2082, the last day of that year.

Simple subtraction gets the year right but not the day. The months do not line up with AD months, and their lengths vary, so the same AD date can fall on a different BS day from one year to the next. Use the converter or a printed calendar for exact days.

Reading BS dates in Nepali

In Nepali, BS dates are written with Devanagari numerals: ० १ २ ३ ४ ५ ६ ७ ८ ९. The converter shows each result in English and in Nepali, for example:

  • English: 6 Kartik 2083 BS, Friday
  • Nepali: कार्तिक ६, २०८३, शुक्रबार

The months, in order, are Baisakh, Jestha, Asar, Shrawan, Bhadra, Asoj, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun and Chaitra. English spellings vary, so you may also see Baishakh, Ashadh or Ashwin. In 2083 BS, Asar is the longest month with 32 days, and Mangsir and Magh have 29.

Common mistakes

  • Adding 56 years 8 months to get the day. The offset is only an average. It gives the right year and roughly the right month, but not the exact day.
  • Assuming BS months match AD months. Baisakh starts in mid-April, so each BS month spans parts of two AD months. Kartik 2083 runs from 18 October to 16 November 2026.
  • Treating provisional years as final. Dates after 2083 BS can change by a day when the committee approves the year.

Why converters disagree after 2083 BS

On 23 October 2026, the 2084 BS calendar has not been approved yet. The committee usually approves a year around Magh or Falgun, so 2084 is expected around January or February 2027.

Until then, converters use predicted month lengths, and the tables they use differ. For 2083 BS and earlier, every table we tested agrees in every month. From 2084 BS they split into two groups, and by 1 Baisakh 2085 one group says 13 April 2028 and the other says 14 April 2028.

This converter uses the table that matches Hamro Patro for 2084 and 2085 BS, and marks every result after 2083 BS as provisional. We will update it when the committee approves each new year. If an exact date in 2084 BS or later matters, for a document or an event, check it against the approved calendar once it is published.

Questions

What is the Nepali date today?

The converter above shows it for your time zone. For example, on 23 October 2026 it is 6 Kartik 2083 BS, written कार्तिक ६, २०८३ in Nepali.

How many years is BS ahead of AD?

About 56 years and 8 months. From 1 Baisakh in mid-April to 31 December, add 57 to the AD year; from 1 January to the end of Chaitra, add 56.

When is Nepali New Year 2084?

1 Baisakh 2084 BS is on Wednesday 14 April 2027. That date follows from the approved 2083 calendar, but the month lengths within 2084 are still provisional.

Why can't BS dates be calculated with a formula?

BS month lengths, from 29 to 32 days, follow the sun's entry into each sign of the zodiac and are set each year by Nepal's calendar committee. Converters have to use published tables.

Why do Nepali date converters give different answers?

For 2083 BS and earlier all reliable tables agree. From 2084 BS the month lengths are not yet approved, and the tables used by different converters disagree by a day in some months.
